UPDATE: Hanover Police Arrest Lebanon Man After Shooting Near Dartmouth Campus

Hanover â€" Hanover police have arrested a Lebanon man in connection with a shooting Friday night near the Dartmouth campus.

Gage Young, 22, is being charged with second-degree assault after police said he fired a handgun and struck a 19-year-old teen in the back.

Police said Young was traveling through Hanover in a car when the incident took place Friday night. He was first detained shortly after the shooting after Lebanon police spotted what they considered a suspicious vehicle parked near Route 10, about 3½ miles south of the Dartmouth Green, according to police.

Police said they have filed a motion in court to keep the name of the victim confidential as the investigation continues. Officials said the shooting appears to have been random.

Hanover â€" Hanover police say a shooting last night near the Dartmouth College c ampus appears to be an “isolated event” and are continuing to investigate, but that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

A 19-year-old man from he New England-area is in stable condition after being shot once on School Street, Hanover police said earlier this morning.

Police responded around 9:45 p.m. on Friday and found the victim on the ground on School Street near the Christian Science Reading Room and West Wheelock Street, about a block from the Dartmouth Green, authorities said.

The shooting sparked a shelter-in-place order on the Dartmouth campus and a lockdown of downtown Hanover restaurants that were lifted about 12:35 a.m.

The victim was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was in stable condition, according to a news release from Hanover Police.

Dartmouth said the victim is not affiliated with the college.

Hanover Police Chief Charlie Dennis issued a news release shortly after noon today saying his department ’s investigation, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, “has revealed credible information that this shooting incident was an isolated event. We are confident that there are no further safety concerns related from those involved in this incident.”

Police Capt. Mark Bodanza earlier had said authorities are investigating whether the teen, who he said was from New Hampshire but outside the Upper Valley, was shot by someone who then drove from the scene.

“That’s the potential that we are looking into,” Bodanza said around 7:30 Saturday morning.

The teen was visiting Hanover with other people, he said.

The shooting and shelter-in-place warning prompted a heavy police response from surrounding communities, as well as unsubstantiated reports of other gunshots around Hanover.

“We responded to several calls throughout Hanover, some that were on Dartmouth property, for reports of something that sounded like gunshots,” Bodanza said.

“We only have evidence of one,” he said.

“This incident is in the early stages of investigation and is ongoing. Hanover Police is requesting that anyone in the area of School Street, West Wheelock Street and Allen Street that may have heard or seen anything, including vehicles coming and going, to contact us at 603-643-2222,” police said in a news release earlier this morning.

The widespread police response included “multiple calls reporting gunshots” around 11:15 p.m. about four miles south of Hanover in West Lebanon, in the area of North Main Street and Fountain Way, Lebanon police said. Police there asked residents with any information or who may have seen a suspicious vehicle or individuals to call Lebanon police at 603-448-1212.

In a separate news release, Lebanon police said that a police sergeant spotted a “suspicious vehicle” parked in the lot of Boston Lot Lake on Route 10 in West Lebanon 10 minutes later, and that when he attempted to investigate, the vehicle drove north “and attempted to evade the officer.”

The 2010 Ford Fusion later crashed on Oak Ridge Road after a brief pursuit, police said, and a 17-year-old male and 22-year-old man were taken into custody.

“Neither suspect was injured in the crash. The Lebanon Police Department is continuing to investigate the matter and will release additional information when appropriate,” police said.

Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon sent a campuswide email today updating the community on the incident.

“We are all grateful for the quick actions of first responders on campus and across the region. They worked through the night to ensure our safety,” Hanlon wrote.

“I urge students who need some support at this time to contact campus safety and security at 603-646-4000 to speak with a dean or counselor on call. Faculty and staff may contact the Faculty/Employee Assistance Program (F/EAP) at 844-216-8308. Let us continue to be ther e for one another.”

Correction

Police now say the victim is from the New England area, but not New Hampshire.
