NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has outlined the severe weather risk for Alabama for Monday night.

The severe risk areas are generally unchanged from Sunday and show an enhanced risk across northwest Alabama.

Places farther to the south and east will have slight or marginal risks, and there is no organized severe risk for the areas in light green in southern Alabama.

Storms are expected to develop ahead of and along a cold front and reach Alabama's western border as soon as 9 p.m.

They will track east and south while gradually weakening.

The Storm Prediction Center will be watching to see if supercells can develop ahead of the main line -- and those will contain a greater threat of tornadoes.

Forecasters in their last discussion said the greatest tornado threat appeared to be over northern Mississippi "though isolated tornadoes can not be ruled out where near-surface based thunderstorms can develop across the Tennessee Valley."

The squall line of storms will contain mainly a threat of damaging winds.

The threat for severe storms will last into Tuesday, which is Election Day.

A sliver of eastern Alabama will have a slight risk of severe storms, but a larger area that includes Birmingham, Anniston and Gadsden, Montgomery, Auburn and Troy will have a marginal risk.

The Storm Prediction Center said a few severe storms with locally strong wind gusts and maybe a tornado or two will be possible in the slight risk area.

Isolated severe storms will be possible in the marginal risk area.

The storms are expected to exit the region in the late morning hours on Tuesday.

What is an enhanced risk? What is an enhanced risk?

Northwest Alabama has an enhanced risk of severe weather starting tonight, which means that numerous severe storms will be possible.

All forms of severe weather will be on the table, including tornadoes.

A slight risk means scattered severe storms will be possible, and isolated severe storms will be possible in marginal risk areas.

A large part of north Alabama, including Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, Athens, Hartselle, Decatur, Florence and Russellville, are in an enhanced risk area for storms tonight.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville said damaging wind gusts will be possible, but so will tornadoes and hail.

Areas west of Interstate 65 will have the greatest risk of tornadoes, the weather service said.

The storms could enter the western part of the region by 10 p.m. and push eastward through the overnight hours.

Forecasters are expecting a squall line of storms to develop ahead of a cold front.

The weather service said scattered storms could also develop ahead of the main line, but they noted the intensity of those storms is still "very uncertain."
