OAKLAND â" Northbound lanes of Interstate 880 in the area of 23rd Avenue in East Oakland were closed early Saturday after a vehicle crashed into a support beam causing three steel girders for an overpass construction project to fall onto the roadway, the California Highway Patrol said.
A 28-year-old Hayward woman whose vehicle hit the support beam was hospitalized with injuries said to be non-life threatening.
The wreck happened at 3:40 a.m. Saturday and as of 7 a.m. there was no estimate of when the northbound lanes would reopen.
The CHP said the woman was speeding when she hit the support beam, causing it to shatter and prompting three 85-foot-long girders that are part of the 23rd Avenue overpass construction project to fall and block the lanes.
Crews were not working on the overpass project at the time of the crash, officials said.
CHP Officer Matthew Hamer said the crash is under investigation, and it is not known at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
A Sig Alert was issued and motorists were being advised to take other routes.
Caltrans crews and other personnel were on scene to assist in removing the beams from the roadway.
Check back for updates.
