Former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cracked a joke about former Attorney General Eric Holder and current Democratic New Jersey Senator Cory Booker looking alike after her interviewer confused the two.
Recodeâs Kara Swisher in a Q&A with Clinton on Friday in New York City asked, âWhat do you think of Cory Booker ⦠saying, âKick them in the shins?â"
It was actually Holder who earlier this month said Democrats must be as tough as GOP members if they want to win more elections.
âMichelle [Obama] always says âWhen they go low, we go high.â No. No. When they go low, we kick them,â Holder said at an event to support the Democratic nominee for Georgia governor, Stacy Abrams.
Recode's Kara Swisher during a Q&A asked Clinton, "What do you think of Cory Booker, what do yo u think about him saying, âKick them in the shins,â essentially start to get to that kind of politicalâ¦"
"That was Eric Holder," Clinton cut in to correct Swisher.
âOh yeah, Eric Holder,â Swisher said.
âI know they all look alike," Clinton joked, though it isn't clear if she meant to mock Swisher or just crack a one-liner.
"No they donât," Swisher replied, as the audience laughed. "Oh, well done."
Booker and Holder are both black politicians, but do not look alike. Booker, 49, is bald and clean shaven. Holder, 67, has graying hair and a mustache.
Republicans accused Holder of calling for violence with his comment. Holder said he meant it as a metaphor.
Clinton uttered the joke while answering Swisherâs question about whether Democrats were being hurt by political correctness.
"Whatâs often called political correctness is politeness. Itâs not being rude and insulting to people. Itâs respecting the diversity that we have in our society, so I donât know exactly how to answer that because the Democratic Party is a much more diverse political party, attracting people who are African-American, Latino, LGBT,â Clinton said.
The former first lady said people feel more comfortable when they are accepted in a political movement or party.
âI donât want to go around insulting people, I donât want to paint with a broad brush every immigrant is this, every African American is that, every person with different religious beliefs or whatever, painting people with a broad brush,â Clinton said. âYou know, thatâs childish.â
Conservatives were quick to criticize Clinton for the remark. The overwhelming majority of African-Americans voted for Clinton instead of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
