Malcolm Mitchell seems to be stumbling out of the gate in 2018 and it could very well cost him his future with the Patriots.
According to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal, the wide receiver underwent a knee procedure on Monday and will cause him to not be with the rest of his teammates as New England begins training camp on Thursday. Daniels continues by saying that this latest setback may not cost Mitchell the season, but it could very well spell the end to his time with New England as it's possible the team could waive or release him with an injury settlement before the start of the year.
This all comes after a report from the NFL Network indicating that the team is looking to trade the wide out.
Daniels reports that the procedure on Monday was in an attempt to "determine cause and a solution for Mitchell's ongoing knee pain."
Mitchell barely participated during the offseason workout program this summer as only a photo surfaced on the first day on OTAs of him catching a pass, but from then on was missing until the final day of minicamp where he was down on the lower field with the rest of injured/rehabbing Patriots.

The former fourth round pick out of Georgia missed all of the 2017 season after suffering a knee injury against the Texans in the preseason. He was able to make his return to the practice field for a moment later last year, but wasn't able to fully come off the PUP list.
Injuries have been a part of Mitchell's story dating back to his days at Georgia where he suffered a torn ACL in 2013 and then another knee injury in 2014, which required arthroscopic surgery. When he is healthy, Mitchell was looked at as a very promising receiving for the Patriots.
During his rookie season in 2016, the receiver caught 32 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns. Mitchell also proved he can come up in the clutch. In Super Bowl LI, he was looked at by Tom Brady seven times and caught six of those targets for 70 yards, while New England marched on their 25-point comeback against the Falcons.
Mitchell has reportedly been working out at the TB12 Center as part of his rehabbing process to be ready for the 2018 season along with being a regular at the team facility, but his repeated injuries seem to be getting too much for the Patriots to handle.
Now, it appears they'll either look to move him to recoup some assets or simply waive him to clear the way for some other players on their 90-man roster.
