âSaturday Night Liveâsâ Pete Davidson is facing mounting pressure to apologize for a widely condemned bit in which he mocked a wounded veteran and GOP congressional candidate for wearing an eye patch.
Following Davidsonâs remarks about Dan Crenshaw, who is running for a seat representing Texasâs 2nd congressional District, the comedian, his show and SNLâs executive producer were hammered by politicians, talk-show hosts, veterans and others.
âThis is absolutely appalling,â tweeted Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who lost her legs in Iraq. âNo one should ever mock a Veteran for the wounds they received while defending our great nation, regardless of political party or what you think of their politics. Pete Davidson owes Dan Crenshaw an apology.â
Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that SNLâs executive producer Lorne Michaels should be fired.
But Crenshaw â" who lost his right eye in 2012 after a bomb exploded during a mission in Afghanistan, his third military deployment â" said he wonât ask for an apology from Davidson or SNL.
âThey probably should apologize, but that doesnât mean Iâm going to demand an apology,â he said Monday on âFox & Friends,â adding: âThey certainly crossed the line, but their apology wonât mean anything to me.â
When asked about the matter on Sunday â" and again on Monday â" N BC representatives said the network would not be commenting.
Davidson has not yet responded to the criticism.
Despite being told he would probably never see again, Crenshaw, a Navy SEAL, regained sight in his left eye and went on two more deployments. âItâs actually a miracle I can see at all and can continue serving the American people,â he said on Fox.
Davidson seemed to be aware of Crenshawâs background during Saturdayâs âWeekend Updateâ segment, in which he gave his âfirst impressionsâ of various candidates running in this election cycle.
âThis guy is kind of cool, Dan Crenshaw,â Davidson said, as an image of Crenshaw wearing an eye patch flashed on the screen.
His co-host, Michael Che, chuckled and said, âYo, come on.â
âHold on,â Davidson replied. âYou may be surprised to hear heâs a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie.â
The audience laughed.
âIâ m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever,â Davidson added, shrugging and grinning. âWhatever.â

Online, scores of people have expressed anger over the sketch and demanded Davidson and NBC apologize.
âGetting dumped by your pop star girlfriend is no excuse for lashing out at a decorated war hero who lost his eye serving our country,â Jack Pandol, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement that referenced Davidsonâs much-publicized recent breakup with singer Ariana Grande.
Eric Trump tweeted that NBC and SNL âshould be ashamed of themselves . . . Thankfully, we have brave men & women like @DanCrenshawTX otherwise gutless cowards like #PeteDavidson wouldnât have a desk to sit behind.â
The Texas Republican Party called the bit âutterly abhorrent.â
Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), another candidate who was mocked in Davidsonâs sketch, said the jab at Crenshaw was a âdisgraceâ and indicated that the comedian should be booted from the show.
âWhat are NBCâs standards for firing? PC to insult wounded vets?!?â King demanded, adding: â(Davidson also insulted me. Who cares?!)â
âThis is outrageous. It isnât funny at all,â wrote Dana Perino, a Fox News contributor and former White House press secretary. Crenshaw, she wrote, âserved his country â" sacrificed for it â" and now is willing to serve again as a Member of Congress (or whatever).â
On Monday, âThe Viewâ hosts called it a âsucker punch,â a âtone deafâ statement and a âreally crappy joke.â
But Joy Behar said offensive humor is SNLâs âstock in tradeâ and that the show âdoesnât take any prisoners.â
âThey took a shot at Alec Baldwin, who is part of their family, so they go after a lot of people,â she said. âAnd this kid Davidson, his father died in 9/11 and he said, âI like making things o f a dark, awkward â" weird things that you donât really find funny, funny. Thereâs nothing I wonât joke about and I think itâs because of what happened to me.â
"So, I mean, heâs coming from a place of, you know, you make fun of things that are so painful to lighten the load. Thatâs where heâs coming from, I think.â
Fellow SNL cast member Kenan Thompson also acknowledged the challenges that comedians are up against, but he said that Davidson âmissed the mark.â
âItâs tough when youâre fishing for jokes, like thatâs how stand-ups feel â" like thereâs no real filters out there in the world when theyâre trying to go for a great joke,â he said on the âTodayâ show. âBut at the same time, when you miss the mark, youâre offending people. So you have to kind of like really be a little more aware, in my opinion.
âHe defini tely missed the mark, and I think he was more so commenting on the fact that the joke maybe didnât land as hard as he wanted to, as opposed to being like, âI donât care about veterans.â I think Peteâs a very humble dude and heâs got a big heart. I donât think he goes out to offend people. But stand-ups, theyâre the ones that help us laugh through the most awful things in the first place, so theyâre always fishing in weird places.â
In a tweet over the weekend, Crenshaw acknowledged the overwhelming outrage over Davidsonâs remarks.
He didnât demand an apology, but he did urge the showâs writers not to use injured veterans as âpunchlines.â
Crenshaw later told TMZ that he didnât necessarily want an apology.
âI want us to get away from this culture where we demand apologies every time someone misspeaks,â he said. âI think that would be very healthy for our nation to go in that direction. We donât need to be outward ly outraged. I donât need to demand apologies from them. They can do whatever they want, you know. They are feeling the heat from around the country right now, and thatâs fine.â
He added: âBut I would like [Davidson] and âSaturday Night Liveâ to recognize something, which is that veterans across the country probably donât feel as though their wounds they received in battle should be the subject of a bad punchline for a bad joke. And hereâs the real atrocity in all of this: It wasnât even funny . . . It was just mean-spirited.â
Appearing Monday morning on Fox, Crenshaw suggested that Davidson and his SNL colleagues consider pooling money together and donating to a veterans charity.
