Seth Meyers Criticizes NBC for Airing Trump's "Racist" Migrant Ad
The 'Late Night' host joined stars like Judd Apatow and his network colleague Debra Messing in speaking out against the spot, which was pulled Monday after airing during 'Sunday Night Football.'

Seth Meyers joined the chorus of people speaking out against a Donald Trump anti-immigration campaign ad that CNN claimed was too racist to air.

The spot was pulled by NBC on Monday after airing during the network's high-profile Sunday Night Football matchup between the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

The ad, which also aired on MSNBC, focuses on the "7,000-migrant caravan" crossing Mexico, which has been in the news, with Trump and his supporters warning voters about the dangerous prospect of letting those people across the border. The ad also highlights undocumented immigrant Luis Bracamontes, who was convicted of murdering two sheriff's deputies in California in 2014, urging viewers to "vote Republican" in the Nov. 6 midterms.

"America cannot allow this invasion. The migrant caravan must be stopped. President Trump and his allies will protect our border and keep our families safe," a voiceover intones. "America's future depends on you. Stop the caravan. Vote Republican."

The spot additionally aired on Fox News and Facebook before both outlets pulled it Monday. But CNN rejected the ad, saying in a statement, "CNN has made it abundantly clear in its editorial coverage that this ad is racist. When presented with an opportunity to be paid to take a version of this ad, we declined. Those are the facts."

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter it was not submitted to ABC or CBS.

In its statement announcing it was pulling the ad, NBC said, "After further review, we recognize the insensitive nature of the ad and have decided to cease airing it across our properties as soon as possible."

In a closer-look segment on NBC's Late Night devoted to Trump's final argument headed into midterm elections Monday night, Meyers indicated that his own network, NBC, should have rejected the ad immediately as well.

“Any network should have seen it for what it was and turned it down right away,” he said. "That unfortunately did not happen.... The ad was obviously and explicitly racist."

And he joked that NBC had other options for the 30 seconds of airtime that went to the ad.

“You couldn’t find anything else to fill 30 seconds of ad time during a game between the Patriots and the Packers?” Meyers asked. “Hell, just give us a live stream of Tom Brady on the sidelines in that giant coat.”

The Late Night host joined other stars who criticized NBC for airing the ad, including Judd Apatow and Meyers' NBC colleague, Debra Messing, who both tweeted about the spot.

Messing addressed Will and Grace fans, writing, "I want you to know that I am ashamed that my network aired this disgusting racist ad. It is the antithesis of everything I personally believe in, and what, I believe, our show is all about."
