Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has ousted GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo in Florida’s 26th Congressional District, providing a critical boost to Democrats’ hopes of flipping the House.

The race attracted an astounding $18 million, with the majority of money coming from Democratic groups that hoped to oust the two-term congressman.

Hillary Clinton carried Curbelo’s South Florida district by a margin of 16 points, leading Democrats to list his race as a top pickup opportunity from the early days of Trump’s presidency. But Curbelo, who simultaneously won reelection in 2016 by nearly 12 points, has proved himself to be a political survivor.

The Republican congressman did not shy away from criticizing President Trump, most notably on immigration issues.

Polls are beginning to close around the country after voters made their final choices on candidates for House, Senate and many races down the ballot. Lots of Americans voted early, bringing multiple states past their 2014 early ballot levels. President Trump hit multiple states to make his closing argument, and former president Barack Obama and other Democrats did the same for their side.
