A woman died and her teenage daughter suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing into a tree in north Lincoln overnight Saturday, police say.

An off-duty Lancaster County sheriff's deputy reported the crash after finding the wrecked 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander in a ditch on the west side of North First Street, near Pennsylvania Avenue and Fallbrook Boulevard, around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Julie A. Schmieding, 38, had been driving the southbound SUV when, for reasons unknown to police, it veered right and went off the road, striking an electrical box then crashing into the tree, police said in an accident report.

Her daughter, 15-year-old Tylea Schmieding, a sophomore at North Star High School, was taken to Bryan West Campus with critical injuries.

No one else was inside the SUV, and no one in the area witnessed the crash, according to the accident report. Tylea Schmieding's injuries had prevented her from describing what happened.

Lincoln Police Capt. Danny Reitan said alcohol doesn't appear to have been a factor. It is unclear whether the pair were wearing seat belts.
