Gregg Leakes is battling stage 3 colon cancer, his wife, NeNe Leakes, revealed on Sundayâs Real Housewives of Atlanta season 11 premiere.

Like, Iâve never seen him say, âIâm hurting so bad, the pain is so bad in my stomach.â And finally he said to me, âTake me to the hospital.â â
It was there that Gregg was diagnosed. He said he had to undergo emergency surgery to have part of his colon removed. âWe just werenât prepared to hear that,â NeNe recalled.
Said Gregg: âI guess the scariest part about all of this is when we got to the hospital and the doctor saying that we need to do surgery on you tonight or you ainât going to make it.â
Though it was the lowest point for Gregg, he said he was mentally ready to say goodbye. âI went over and prayed to God and I told Him, âIf itâs time, letâs go,â â Gregg said. ââI donât fear death, I donât want to go. If my work here is finished here, take care of them, letâs go.â â
Sitting with family and close friends in a prayer circle, Gregg also said he had penned NeNe a letter just in case he didnât survive. âI wrote a note to my doctor and I told him to give it to you if I didnât come out,â Gregg says, breaking down in tears. âWriting that note was the hardest thing I ever did in my life.â
Luckily, Gregg survived that surgery. And the outcome inspired him for the road ahead. âYou never know whatâs in you until you at that door,â Gregg said. âI never thought I had it in me to fight cancer. Now, I want to beat cancerâs ass.â
âYou have been my light,â Gregg told NeNe. âI couldnât do this without you. I couldnât. I wouldnât even try. So I want to thank you, baby.â
âThey cut my colon out, my heart got bigger,â he added. âI donât need it. Itâs gone. It was infected.â
NeNe and Gregg have been married since 1997 and share two sons: Bryson and Brentt. In 2010, the couple separated, then divorced the following year â" only to remarry in June 2013 at a ceremony that was filmed for her spinoff, I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding.
Back in September, NeNe revealed that Gregg was doing âreally, really goodâ after a five-hour procedure she said they hoped was his âlast surgery towards a full recovery.â
On Sundayâs premiere, she opened up about the emotional challenges of watching Gregg go through this. âItâs a very hard role to take care of someone,â she said. âI feel like if I crumble, then Gregg and Brentt is going to be over. I just feel like I have to be the strong voice.â
As brave as NeNeâs been, she said sheâs had her weak periods. âIâve put on a brave face but I have my moments in my bedroom, usually alone,â she admitted. âIâve had many moments in my car. If my car could talk itâd be like, âThis bitch cries too much.â â
Throughout it all, sheâs turned to prayer. âIn order to get through something like this, you have to pray for strength⦠Weâre basically going to pray for healing, comfort and understanding,â she said.
âThereâs a chance the cancer could come back, but thank God that he caught it when he did catch it,â NeNe continued. âHe could not be here.â
