Jane Fonda Takes the High Road on Megyn Kelly One Last Time

Many months before the scandal that would end her time at the netwo rk, Megyn Kelly’s biggest problem at NBC was Jane Fonda. In the first week of her Megyn Kelly Today show, Fonda called Kelly out for asking the 80-year-old Oscar winner about her plastic surgery. Fonda made it clear with a single look at the time, and again months later, even many months later in a Sundance interview, that she expected better. “It wasn’t like I was upset,” Fonda said in January. “I was stunned. It was so inappropriate. It showed that she’s not that good an interviewer.” At the same time, Fonda said, if Kelly wanted to interview her again, “if she comes around and learns her stuff, sure.”

Now that Kelly’s network career has stalled out, t hough, she won’t get the chanceâ€"and Fonda feels bad about it. On Thursday, at the Women’s Media Center Awards, Fonda told Us Weekly that she feels sympathy for Kelly. “I feel badly because, you know, I wanted her to make it, I did,” Fonda said.

Fonda, who co-founded Women̢۪s Media Center in 2005 with Gloria Steinem and feminist writer Robin Morgan, had already indicated she had moved on from the Kelly kerfuffle. During an appearance on Today with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb in January, Fonda and her Grace and Frankie co-star Lily Tomlin made light of the incident:

Maybe Fonda̢۪s new olive branch from last night has reached Kelly, but seeing how she̢۪s reacted to Fonda̢۪s comments in the past, there̢۪s no telling how she̢۪ll take it.
