'The Voice' Recap: Mariah Carey Makes Her Debut On Night 1 Of Knockouts

The Knockouts kick off on ‘The Voice’ and Mariah Carey joins the show as a key advisor for all 32 contestants! â€" And, the coaches shocked everyone with their steals and saves!

The Knockout Rounds begin on The Voice! Here’s how it works: A pair of artists within the same team are selected to sing individual performances one after the other. Remember: Unlike the battle rounds, where two members of each team were paired together to sing a duet, these artists will sing solo, with all eyes on just them!

But, here’s the suspense factor: The two artists are not informed who they are up against until a few minutes prior to their performances. This time around, the artists get to pick out their own song to perform, and then their coaches will give them guidance and advice, per usual. Following the performances, the coaches will then decide which contestant moves on in the competition. Also, each coach only has one steal and one save. (You’ll want to remember this).

Finally, the last surprise of the first night ofKnockouts is that Mariah Carey joins the show! That’s right, the legendary singer will be a key advisor to each coach â€" Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Jennifer Hudson â€" and all 32 contestants. Who will make it to the Live playoffs? Check out our recap!

TEAM ADAM: TYKE JAMES Vs. KEITH PALUSO â€" Keith performs “You’re The Best Thing”. Tyke performs “Ring Of Fire”. Both male performers added their guitars to their performances. â€" Adam chooses Tyke. Kelly tries to steal Keith. But, Adam tries to save Keith. Keith chooses Kelly because her “energy is contagious.”

TEAM KELLY: KIMBERLY JOYE Vs. ZAXAI Vs. NASTASHA GREYCLOUD â€" This is a special circumstance on the show because Kelly admits Cody Ray Raymond had to leave the show for “personal reasons.” So, two singers will stay and one will go. Natasha sings Tennessee Whiskey, a blues song. The Nashville singer recalls heading to The Voice after going through a divorce. She performed a passionate song, which she also performed at her sister’s wedding.

Kymberli a gospel singer who performed backup vocals for Childish Gambino, is ready to be her own artist. She decides to perform “Middle” by Zedd and Maren Morris. This is an unusual choice for her as she usually sticks to her gospel roots. Then, Zaxai, a contestant who Kelly had previously stole, performs “Crusin'” by Smokey Robinson.

Now it’s time to deliberate. And, remember, this is a three-way Knockout. And, Kelly has no idea with to do, it’s hysterical. The second winner of the Knockout is… Zaxai, “the dark horse” Kelly said. She even admitted that she couldn’t go on without him. â€" But wait, Blake, who previously said he had a plan down the stretch, and wasn’t looking to steal anytime soon, STOLE Natasha!

TEAM J. HUD: MAKENZIE THOMAS Vs. MIKE PARKER â€" MaKenzie, the singer who said J. Hud as helped wth her confidence, performs “How Deep Is Your Love”, a drastic, slower twist on Calvin Harris‘ high tempo track. Mike performs “Break Even” by The Script. But, his rendition will be more of a “worship/pop/R&B” song. J. Hud thinks this is perfect for him. In the end, MaKenzie had so many vocal runs in her performance that it was evident she had won the Knockout. And, maybe the fact that she made Mariah Carey cry during practice, helped. â€"Kelly chooses MaKenzie.

TEAM ADAM: RADHA Vs. REAGAN STRANGE â€" Radha, the “sweet and compassionate” singer (as Adam says) is singing “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson Five and Mariah Carey, so, the pressure is on. And, it’s a hard song to do, but it’s a song Radha says the song is how she learned how to sing. Reagan performs “Dancing On My Own”, a song she says made her realize she can “help people” over come accomplishing their dreams. Oh, and, Reagan is 14-years-old and she’s a powerhouse with a “mature” voice, Mariah says. These are two of Adam’s most powerful singers, which is why he did this… â€" Adam chooses Reagan, but SAVES Radha!

TEAM BLAKE: FUNSHO Vs. KATRINA CAIN â€" Katrina performs “Don’t Let Me Know” by The Chainsmokers. The electro-pop singer is stepping out of her comfort zone sound for her third performance in a row. It’s a risky song for her usual sound, and Mariah says she really needs to trail this and be unique. Funsho picks The Weeknd‘s “Earned It”. He says the song is special to him because he relates it to his family traveling to the U.S. from Nigeria. Funsho nailed his performance a Mariah Carey-featured track infront of Mariah Carey. But, Katrina failed to deliver, and Blake even said she was “handcuffed” with her song choice. â€" Blake chooses Funsho.

TEAM J. HUD: SANDYREDD Vs. PATRIQUE FORTSON â€" Patrique is the gospel singer who was signed to a label at age six. But, when things fell through, he decided to step away from music… until he gave it a second try with The Voice. “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith. He dedicated the song to his father, who recently had a stroke. The experience showed him how fragile life is. Sandyredd, mother of a beautiful baby boy describes her occupation as a “struggling artist.” She performs “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. â€" J. Hud ends the night crowning Patrique as the winner, but she also uses her save on Sandyredd!
