'The Voice': Adam Levine Steals an Artist From Blake Shelton
Season 15̢۪s Knockouts continued on NBC's The Voice on Tuesday night, with coaches Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton working with this season̢۪s celebrity key adviser Mariah Carey to get their artists ready for the head-to-head competition. Artists sang songs of their own choosing, and coaches had the opportunity to steal an artist from another coach or to save an artist of their own.
The first pairing came from Team Jennifer: Franc West and Tyshawn Colquitt. West sang “Call Out My Name†by The Weeknd, and he made the song his own with strong phrasing and creative sensibilities that blended genres. He let out just enough rasp, giving a dynamic performance.
Colquitt went for a similarly soulful and genre-blending song, tackling “Pillow Talk†by Zayn. He showcased impressive range but oversang in parts during rehearsal, which Carey worked with him on in time for the final performance, which was well-rounded. He hit the high notes, but it wasn’t enough to win. Hudson picked West, and Colquitt went home.
Abby Cates and Claire Dejean from Team Kelly were up next. DeJean sang “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back†by Shawn Mendes, which is a tough song to sing, but she handled it well. Her pitch wasn’t perfect, but the ambitious song choice helped her stand out.
Cates came off as the more experienced singer, performing Clarkson’s own “Because of You,†which was also an ambitious choice. She gave a strong lyrical interpretation and one of the finest-tuned performances of the night. Clarkson chose Cates as the winner, and Dejean was eliminated.
Dave Fenley and Kameron Marlow of Team Blake followed with two solid country performances. Fenley sang “Stuck on You†by Lionel Richie, and he connected well with the lyrics and had strong performance abilities, but the vocals weren’t anything special.
Marlowe sang Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," which was a solid song choice, showcasing that he can do more than just standard country songs. It helped him stand out on Team Blake, but Shelton tends to stick with straightforward country singers and unsurprisingly chose Fenley as the winner. Levine swooped in for the steal, adding Marlowe to Team Adam.
