Canada on Wednesday became the worldâs first industrialised country to legalise the recreational use and cultivation of dagga.
The Government's aim with the legalisation of dagga is to take profits away from organised crime and to regulate the production, distribution and consumption of a product that millions of Canadians had been regularly consuming illegally anyway.
12.7% of the Canadian population regularly consume dagga, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
South Africa recently legalised the consumption and cultivation of dagga, but only for private recreational use.
Not so in Canada where, if youâre 18 and older, youâre allowed to possess and share up to 30 grams of legal dagga in public.
Also, the sale of recreational dagga will be allowed at licensed websites and shops.
Ten US states now allow the recreational use of dagga while medical dagga is legal in 30 states.
