The Q3 is bigger and more high-tech than before.
Audi has introduced the brand-new, second-generation Q3 online. The model will make its public debut this fall at the Paris auto show and go on sale next year as a 2019 model.
Designers made evolutionary tweaks to the Q3's lines to take it in a bolder direction. Audi said the Q8 previewed a new design language for its SUVs and, indeed, we notice that some styling cues carry over between the two models. The grille is wider and shorter than before, it's framed by a thick piece of chrome trim, and it incorporates thin vertical slats. Moving beyond the front end, the Q3's overall proportions don't drastically change but it looks sharper and more grown-up than before.
The cabin gets a full makeover, too. The Q3 is the first -- but certainly not the last -- Audi to receive a single-screen version of the MMI Touch Response infotainment system inaugurated last year by the A8. The 10.1-inch screen is embedded into a glass panel to give the cabin a clean, clutter-free look with fewer buttons than before. Audi wisely retained the volume knob, though. The driver now faces the configurable digital instrument cluster (called virtual cockpit) found in the brand's other models.
Slightly bigger dimensions make the cabin more spacious. The second-row seats now slide by about six inches and recline for additional comfort. Trunk space checks in at 18.7 cubic feet with five passengers on board and 53.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat into the floor.
We don't have technical specifications for the American-spec model yet. In Europe, the Q3 will launch with one turbodiesel engine and three gasoline-burning four-cylinders. If we had to guess, we'd say the our version of the car will receive the turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 230 horsepower. In Europe, it shifts through a seven-speed automatic transmission and sends its power to the four wheels through Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system.
The 2019 Audi Q3 will go on sale in Europe in November of this year. Pricing information and information about the American-spec Q3 will be available in the coming months.
