As Hurricane Harvey's hardest hit areas continue to dry out this weekend, major cities like Austin are facing a gas shortage crisis that have inspired at least one man to go to extreme measures for fuel.
Motorists in Texas' largest cities have overreacted to Harvey's impact on Houston's energy industry by rushing to the pump.

A glance at tracker.gasbuddy.com shows numerous gas stations in San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas completely out of fuel as of 11:45 a. Friday.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Aug. 25. Now, gas prices have spiked in states like Georgia and North Carolina, while drivers in Texas are forced to wait in long lines just to fill up their tanks. U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry discussed the crisis on Thursday and warned against gouging gas prices.

A photo of one man allegedly shows him filling up what appears to be dark garbage cans sitting in the back of his truck at an Austin-area gas station sometime over the past 24 hours.
One of the photos was posted on Austin's KXAN and another of the man, from a different angle, found its way to Imgur, a free photo sharing website.

Transporting gasoline is a very dangerous activity, according to CNBC. Even the red portable plastic containers can pose a risk but are far more safe than ordinary plastic garbage cans.

"Some plastics become brittle with age and are incompatible with gasoline. Other containers are not strong enough to withstand the pressures of expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes. In addition, some containers sold as gas cans usually cannot be sealed well enough to prevent spilling," reported the National Ag Safety Database.

The photo of the Austin man filling up his garbage cans reminded people on KXAN's Facebook page of a episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" where a group of friends attempt to sell gasoline door-to-door out of cans in the back of a truck.

A request for comment has been placed with the woman who posted the photo on KXAN.
